Barcelona’s iconic Basílica de la Sagrada Família is preparing to crown its skyline with the completion of the central Tower of Jesus Christ, set to make the basilica the tallest church in Europe. Rising to a height of 172 meters, the tower will surpass all other Christian places of worship on the continent.
Construction of the Sagrada Família, designed by renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, began in 1882 and has remained one of the world’s most ambitious architectural projects. The central tower is scheduled for completion by late 2025 or early 2026, marking a historic milestone in a project that has spanned nearly a century and a half.
Once finalized, the basilica will feature 18 towers in total, each symbolizing key figures of Christianity, with the Tower of Jesus Christ as the centerpiece. The project has long been seen as a masterpiece of modernist architecture, attracting millions of visitors annually and representing both cultural and spiritual significance.
The basilica’s progress continues to inspire global admiration, reflecting the perseverance of generations of builders, artisans, and the faithful who have contributed to its completion.
