St. George Melkite Church in Dardghaya Damaged by Airstrike

The St. George Melkite Catholic Church in Dardghaya, South Lebanon, a centuries-old place of worship, suffered severe destruction following an Israeli airstrike in October 2024. This historic church, built in the 18th century, stood as a symbol of the Melkite Catholic community in the region, hosting generations of baptisms, weddings, and religious celebrations.

Historical and Cultural Significance

The church, constructed with traditional stone masonry, represented both the spiritual and cultural identity of the Melkite Catholic faithful in southern Lebanon. Its architecture featured distinctive vaulted ceilings and stone carvings that reflected the craftsmanship of the 18th century. For local Christians, the church was more than a building—it was the heart of community life.

Extent of the Damage

The airstrike left the church’s roof collapsed, walls fractured, and interior artifacts destroyed. Religious icons, altars, and historical items were either lost or severely damaged. Community leaders describe the destruction as not only a physical loss but also a blow to cultural heritage and interfaith coexistence in the region.

Restoration Challenges

According to heritage preservation experts, restoring the church will require an estimated $3 million. The process involves structural stabilization, reconstruction of the roof, and conservation of surviving artifacts. The project faces major challenges due to limited resources, ongoing security concerns, and the urgent humanitarian needs of the displaced population.

Symbol of Resilience

Despite the destruction, the local Christian community remains committed to preserving its heritage. Plans are being discussed with international organizations and cultural preservation NGOs to secure funding and technical support for the reconstruction. For many, rebuilding the church represents hope, resilience, and the survival of Lebanon’s diverse cultural identity.
